A QR (quick response) code is a specific matrix code that can be picked up by some smartphone’s built-in cameras. The code consists of black symbols arranged into a square pattern on a white background, in which data such as text or a URL can be stored and detected by a scanning application on the phone. Smartphone users can scan QR codes and instantly view the webpage or special offer it contains.
QR codes were created in Japan in 1994 and have been popular in East Asian countries, such as South Korea, ever since. There was a slower uptake of the technology in the West up until recently, with more and more western companies now using QR codes as a way to engage with customers quickly and more easily.
