Timanfaya National Park: The Highlight of Lanzarote

There are many reasons why holidaymakers choose to visit the Canary Islands. One of those reasons is the unique volcanic landscape found across the region. The island of Lanzarote is home to the most intriguing of landscapes in the Canaries, with the Timanfaya National Park a must for any visitor.

This is the place where the Fire Mountains rose up and devastated this part of the island. Don’t worry; the last volcanic eruptions here were in 1824! However, due to the lack of rainfall the area appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions, creating the most unique of atmospheres. It was declared a National Park in 1968.

A visit here should form part of all Canary Islands holidays due to the moon-like landscape and jaw dropping scenery. You will feel as if you are on another planet as you meander round viewing some of the most rare plant life anywhere in the world. Demonstrations of how hot the area is are a key ingredient of any visit here as you will be able to see steam erupting following water being poured into a bore hole in the rock, created by the soaring temperatures just below the surface.

There’s a restaurant in the National Park where you can enjoy traditional Canarian food cooked using the geothermal heat. Here you can take in the imposing views of the park while taking a break from the heat, enjoying the unique food and atmosphere.

If you are looking for something a little different, there is the possibility of camel rides or a coach trip around the National Park. Included in the entry fee, the coach trip will take visitors to all the most famous points in the park and will also include an audio commentary of a local priest who was an eyewitness to the eruptions. This is likely to prove one of the most informative and fun activities in Lanzarote.

Whether you sound interested in steam firing up the ground, food cooked with geothermal heat, a camel ride, or simply being amazed by the awe inspiring scenery, a visit to the Timanfaya National Park is a must for your holiday in Lanzarote.

Whichever town you visit on your Canary Islands holidays you will be sure to be mesmerised by the wealth of history and culture.
