MEDIACITY MOVE SIGNALS NEW ERA FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS

26 September 2011- Students on one of the longest established Masters of Business Administration programmes in the UK are set to study at the new heart of the digital and media industries.

On October 4, 2011, the Salford MBA will welcome students to the University of Salford’s new state of the art facility at MediaCityUK, which sits in the same building as ITV and alongside BBC North, Ten Alps and many other businesses from the digital, creative and media industries for the first time.

The move will see students on the course, which aims to nurture business leaders with particularly entrepreneurial and enterprising approaches to management, studying in an area that’s set to provide workspace to more than 1,100 creative businesses of all sizes.

Dr Polly Sobreperez, Director of the MBA Programme, said: “The move to the University’s new facility at MediaCityUK will expose the MBA students to the changes and innovations happening in the industry there, providing invaluable insight into the changing face of business management.

“The close proximity to so many companies– from start-ups to some of the country’s largest organisations, like the BBC and ITV –will also provide fantastic opportunities for students to get hands-on experience of the business side of the media and creative industries.”

Students will also benefit from opportunities to approach MediaCityUK businesses about working with them for their client-focussed consultancy project, which replaces the traditional Masters level dissertation as the major final piece of work on the MBA.

The new base at MediaCityUK will also provide the course with a solid basis for reconsidering the role of managers and the nature of leadership, in light of the evolving changes within digital and creative practices.

Vice Chancellor, Martin Hall, said: “The Salford MBA’s new base at MediaCityUK will offer students a unique opportunity to prepare for the fast-moving 21st century business environment. When the course was originally accredited by the Association of MBAs, it was particularly commended for its links to business and innovative course format, and the new base at MediaCityUK only reinforces that.

“Being based at MediaCityUK will mean students will have unrivalled opportunities to engage with the digital and creative industries. The area will not only act as the intellectual hub of knowledge exchange, but is also a tangible base for establishing links, collaborations, relationships and associations which they can carry into their working lives.”

The University’s new facility at MediaCityUK will become home to more than 1,500 students and staff when it opens on 4 October 2011. Initially it will offer a range of courses to undergraduates and postgraduates including Audio Technology, Journalism, Animation, Computer and Video Games, Digital Broadcast Technology, and Creative Technology.

Facilities will include HD TV studios, radio broadcast studios, a living lab research facility, media suite, digital media and performance lab, post-production facilities, edit facilities, meeting pods and dubbing theatres.
