The renowned private practice can now perform smear tests on request after consultation with one of their GPs. The NHS screening service for smears is for people without symptoms and includes women between the ages of 25 and 64. The recall service on the NHS is currently only every 3-5 years.
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in females under 35, with 702 new cases diagnosed in the UK in 2007. However, cervical screening can prevent around 75% of cancer cases in women who are screened regularly, and saves approximately 4,500 lives per year in England.
Screening intervals vary from country to country. In the USA, guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics & Gynaecologists recommend that women begin smear test screening at age 21, be screened every two years through to age 30, and then every three years after that. In France, women can opt for annual smears, whilst gynaecologists in Germany recommend that women who are sexually active should have a smear test every year from the age of 20.
At Pall Mall Medical, the cost of a consultation, examination, cervical smear procedure and lab costs with a follow up consultation is £175.
