HCG, or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, is the pregnancy hormone produced by the placenta. It enters the bloodstream approximately one week after fertilisation and ovulation, when the embryo implants and the placenta attaches to the uterine lining.
Blood HCG testing is much more sensitive than a urine HPT, meaning that the blood test can detect pregnancy several days earlier than the urine test. Pregnancy can be detected by HCG testing as early as three days after conception.
